New style pothead on moonshiner show

These are simple stills with no column. Doublers and puke boxes are allowed.

New style pothead on moonshiner show

Did anyone see the new style pothead on moonshiner? They put a 45 degree fitting coming of the boiler so the tower is set at a 45 degree angle . Any opinions on this setup?

If you're talking about a pelican (or gooseneck?) style pot still riser, it's a fairly common design. It helps to balance the weight (center of gravity), so the still doesn't tip over when empty.

Other than the stability of the boiler is there any other benefit?

On my stills, a balanced head keeps from applying torque to the pressure cooker seal, so I don't get leaks. On a stockpot boiler, it'll keep the lid from twisting out of shape.

I saw that episode. It was a Distillery owner in Missouri's still known as "Mr Whisky". I know somebody who has one. He claims due to the steep upward angle and much longer column that he's getting a lot of reflux. His liqueur is always a higher proof first run than mine.

Your pretty much limited to outdoors though with a 5 ft plus column. It certainly does not balance out a still, quite the opposite in fact, as the majority of the column is to the left of the still at a 45 degree angle straight up.

I sure wish we had caves like that still was set up in around here. I notice they are doing what I do by pitching my yeast but leaving it open to open ferment. It always has a much better flavor than a closed distillers yeast ferment.

I did not yet see such a riser on moonshiners, but I have seen several designs on different forums. Sometimes with both the riser and the condenser in an angle over the boiler.
All properly made to balance the still, so the centre of gravity is kept within the margins of the support.
A small one:

Note: disregard the cork and plastic, it merely is to illustrate the angled riser and condenser!

The stability can also be an argument to make a concentric, upright condenser on top of the riser.

Here is one that I built in mid 2011, it was my first attempt at a pot still.
Id never seen one that shape before, it just made sense to do it that way to keep the weight somewhat balanced so that there wasn't more stress on the boiler or boiler lid than necessary .

It looks way different than that, where you come off at a 45 and go a foot, the one he's talking about goes 5 feet or so straight off that 45.

Ain't that great, Bill? It's fertilized by the pH-adjusted spent stillage.

Thanks SC. It will knock down everything that the Cajun Classic burner will put out. I'm really stoked, and it's easy to build.

That one looks a little closer but add 3 plus feet more off the 45 to have one similar to what the op is referring too. I played it again, the column in question is nearer to 6 feet than 5.

No way I could run one like in the show indoors, but my buddies is about Bob's size. He claims it pulls higher proof than his old column. Both of his have packing too.
