Source for Grains of Paradise Bulk qty

Postby pkiler » Sun Nov 28, 2010 5:04 pm

Hey All, I'm new here, and I'm looking for yer help in locating bags of grains of paradise.
I'm really a perfumer, and my essential oil distiller like to start with 60 lbs of material to distill the EO with.

Does anyone have a source for bulk materials?

Thanks,

You might want to remove you full name dude, unless you live where it is legal to distill. Check your feed stores for grain.

I bought a bag from Mountain Rose Herbs a few years ago. Their website doesn't show it now (at least at a quick glance) but they might special order it or put you onto someone else.

Thanks for your thoughts... I didn't realize that this was an outlaw forum...
And when I mentioned "My Distiller" - that was for essential oils, not for alcohol, BTW...

But I'll contact Mountain Rose Herbs, and see what they say, thanks for the hints...

I use my stove top pot still for making essential oils sometimes. There are a few differences depending on your goal (adjustable pressure steaming to change the extraction temp, for instance), but otherwise, much of the info you find here on construction can directly relate. Remember though to use stainless or glass for an essential oil distiller. I don't have problems when I make peppermint oil, etc, but many oils will react with the copper (clove is a good example, but lots of other oils will react to varying degrees). Having a glass blower friend (lampwork pyrex / scientific blowing) can help.

I didn't see your location last time around, I guess distilling is legal where you come from.
many on the forums here are in the US, which still frowns on distilling without a licence.
those of us in Canada and Oz-trail-ya get the wink and nod, but its still technically not legal.

Yep - even Brothels are legal here. 18 is also the legal drinking/purchasing age - maybe there's a connection ?

is this what your after?, paradise seed.
Imageif so http://www.craftbrewer.com.au

also looking through theier yeast data, Wyeast 5335 - Lactobacillus
Wyeast 5335 - Lactobacillus - Manufactured 25th November 2010.
This culture produces moderate levels of acidity

this could prove very usefully to a lacto ferment to bring through the flavour once again, i can't remember the member i nabbed the link from (they know who they are) but it is a gem of a website my last ferment i used Wyeast 3942 - Belgian Wheat
Wyeast 3942 - Estery, low phenol producing yeast from small Belgian brewery.
Apple-, bubblegum- and plum-like aromas with a dry but fruity finish

and boy were they on the mark, my wheat whisky is now aging (as white dog) i currently have around 2 1/2 ltr of all hearts with one jar of tails added (i couldn't help myself the smell was far stronger than any of the other jars and couldn't waste it :8) back on subject i'm just starting to dabble into specialty grains and boy it makes a change, good luck.

ps, reading over the post again i suspect you are in american none the less, for other ozzies it's a great ref.

I found single pounds of seed, 25 lbs, and 50 lbs. best price for 25 pounds was about $700 USD

Seems like that would be quite enough, if I were to distill it, as more than that and it gets rather expensive,... even at $700, it's pretty much too much.

I'm thinking that I might just want to buy a pound of seed, and a very small distiller for the kitchen, and try it myself with small quantities... just to obtain the Essential oil from this element for my perfumery.

So now, I need to look up a small distiller, are there any plans or specs in this forum somewhere to glean and make up?

Thanks,
PK

i think your best bet would be to look on ebay, for a small cheap glass distilling apparatus but even they are 300 dollers one would also assume a perfumery unless on a hobby scale would alwready have these tools?

Most of the time, materials can be obtained, it is only the very odd elements, like this Grains of Paradise that one must make themselves, and so, I've not made the investment yet for a kitchen distiller for this purpose.

Thanks for the Ebay hint, as I've had one bookmarked on ebay in that price range for quite awhile, hoping to acquire it when appropriate, so now is likely the time.

Thanks for all the help folks!
