Rye; malted or unmalted for UJ?

This is for the general discussion about the whole process end to end.

Rye; malted or unmalted for UJ?

Postby Pa_bon » Wed Mar 22, 2017 1:02 pm

Used malted last year and it was or "is" good. Just wondering what the difference would be using unmalted? Any insight? Thanks.

Hangs motionless upon the air
And deep beneath the rolling waves
In labyrinths of coral caves
An echo of a distant time
Comes willowing across the sand
And everything is green and submarine

If you're not doing a mash of any kind use raw.

Agree with Sugarcreek. Your title makes the subject matter a bit misleading.

Thanks for responses. LHBS has flaked rye. Would this be suitable?

Well, I mean... sure? If you're going to buy flaked rye, why bother with the UJ approach? Buy a 5 gallon paint strainer bag and make some real whiskey.

Real whiskey is in my not-too-distant future. Still working on my 30 gallon double boiler and when I get it done it will be hundred percent corn Allah Pino shine. For now it's sugar heads
