New way of making alcohol?

If you are putting something to distill, drink or eat that you don't know where to put it, then put it here. Let us help you decide.

New way of making alcohol?

Postby Kareltje » Wed Feb 14, 2018 7:13 pm

To me was sent this link:

https://www.facebook.com/NowThisFuture/ ... 787254025/

I could not see a good explanation of the process. Anyone knows more?

To me it seems unlikely, it is the reversion of the burning of ethanol.
But what is the driving force?

And, also interesting: is it illegal to make alcohol in that way?

sounds odd to me, water + co2+ heat = booze?
In fairness I wasn't very good in chemistry in school some 25yr ago and got no better since but seems they left something in the process out

Well,

CH3-CH2OH + 3 O2 ---> 2 CO2 + 3 H2O + heat

is the burning of alcohol.
In theory every reaction can be reversed, but I did not see any clue about the mechanism.

On the other forum someone gave me this link:
This is a bit dated but here's the scientific paper I presume: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1 ... 01169/full
It's all about copper nano particles :)

I think it's exactly the reversed equation you show, aided by the right catalyst and energy input, as you'd expect.

You can make whisky in a reflux still, you can make vodka in a potstill,
and you can eat chicken noodle soup with a crescent wrench. But...

Tell me, if you use carbon dioxide, obtained from the burning of barley - the result will be immediately whiskey?

Well, it was send to me on my facebook line and that is not the most reliable source. Apart from the tendency of the source to send premature and overoptimistic messages.
The burning of alcohol with oxygen into CO2 and H2O is easy and delivers a lot of energy.
So reversing this reaction has to be difficult and take a lot of energy.

But theoretically it is possible.

I have to read the article.

I would have gone more gracefully. On carbon dioxide, I would grow chlorella -https: //en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chlorella - (or spirulina). Further - the classical fermentation and distillation. Simple and elegant.

That is the line of research the agricultural university in my town choosed: grow algae and seaweed on much CO2, harvest it and transform it to either food or energy.
That may be a viable method too, but quite different from the method in the article.
